Real Street Photography
8 May 2014
We were in Hong kong for the Christmas Holidays. My wife Sally suggested I go to "Lady St" Kowloon (Tung Choi St) where they have photography in the street. So one evening I wandered down to Lady Street and found in the adjacent street (Sai Yeung Choi St) all these photograpers in allocated bays along the street touting their skills. This is real street photography, taking their studios down to the street and using the vibrant background as the back drop. Not being a a good photo journalist I didn't get the prices of the instant photos and now I wish I got myself in one..... Maybe next time if they are still there I will pose with a hot Hong Kong chick. (my wife of course!, as I yell out before the saucepan hits my head).
Seriously though, the concept seems to be working. In the age of the selfie, people still want photos of themselves taken with a decent camera and their arms are not long enough to include more fore and background!. Obviously the price of the instant print has to be affordable. I noticed from my short time there, a lot of the photos were of students and tourists from China. Would this model work in New Zealand? Maybe Cuba St Wellington on a Friday Night. You might earn $20.
All the photos were taken with my Nikon D3s . No noise reduction was applied in post processing (lazy). Hey man this is my Blog, not preparation for a photostudy to be printed large.
