Tulou

Tulou Fujian China

In December 2009 we planned to visit China for sight seeing and photography. We were limited in our choices as it was winter and the "frozen" theme did not appeal to us.   So our choices narrowed down to either Hainan Island which is a tropical holiday beach resort, or Xiamen. We chose Xiamen (Wellingtons sister city) and found it to be a great choice. Lots of character, good food and friendly people. Definitely not as fast as Shanghai! One reason for going to Xiamen is the close proximity of the earthen houses (called tulou) built by the Hakka people since the 12th century.

I have just been going through some of your photo sections again. These Tulou are fascinating and the PDF you include has such a good description. i can understand your reluctance to stay there. It does look cold. Perhaps housing around the world could be another study project for you!

Postscript

What got this project going is that Frank from Dragons Chinese restaurant wanted some photos to put on his wall.  I said to him they will be need to be big-very big.

We got two prints roughly enlarged to 1.6m by 1.0m printed onto photographic paper and mounted by Image Lab.

Not bad for a 12 mp camera and far beyond what is recommended for the file size! The Durst Lambda is very good at interpolation (filling in the blanks) and the result is very good with no obvious artifacts.

I was going to get a poster made but it was delayed until I got a website online  that I could direct people to.

Please drop into Dragons, 25 Tory St, Wellington, ph 384 3288, for a great meal and say hello to Friendly Frank and Charming Jessica.
